Description

The name says it all. Biohome Ultimate Media is the ultimate media for canister, HOB and sump filters.

1 kg occupies about 72 cu in. To see how much your filter requires return to the Home page and click on the link at the top, “How Much Do I Need”.

Biohome Ultimate is identical to Mini with the addition of trace elements, including iron and maganese, to support beneficial bacteria growth. Bacteria growth in Ultimate is very fast to control ammonia and nitrite.

Complimentary Filter Starter Balls (1/4 bag per kg)  are shipped with each order to speed filter maturity. It recovers quickly after the use of medications.

Biohome allows both nitrifying (aerobic) and denitrifying (anaerobic) bacteria to grow on and through it’s unique structure. This allows it to also control nitrates. Check the Rules of Thumb for Nitrate Reduction to estimate how much you’ll need to reduce the nitrates in your pond or tank.

Ultimate Media is a biological filter media and good mechanical filtration must be provided to insure the water passing through it does not contain any debris that might clog it.

Just received my Biohome Ultimate in the mail this morning and just wanted to do my part and leave a word here.

The online ordering process was nice and easy to navigate, within less than an hour of my purchase I was contacted via email by Don who was great to communicate with in regards to tracking info and when I was to expect my order.

I’ll come back at a later date and update my experience with the product its self, but as for now it arrived well packaged, with a great info/instruction packet and letter. It’s nice working with companies that put a little more effort into the arrival of the product and overall experience.

    Highly recommend..
    Thanks again Don,

    Justin Penn…

      Justin,
Thanks for the feedback. I’m very glad the Ultimate reached you so quickly and you found the ordering process easy to use. I’m looking forward to hearing how it works for you.
      Stay safe, and…
      Happy Fish Keeping,
      Don

Ive got to say im massively impressed. I have a 75 gallon that was taking forever to finish cycling. My ammonia was low but my nitrites wouldn’t go down. I purchased 2 kilos for a fluval 407 and added almost all of it and the recommended number of starter balls and literally 48 hours later there’s 0 ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. Quickest cycle ever. The product was very clean a little dust but better than other similar products. Quick shipping. Highly recommend.

      Brian,
Thanks for your recent order and your review. Those results are amazing, and I must point out not typical. It usually takes a lot more media for that size tank and a lot longer to see those results especially for nitrate, but very glad to hear it worked so well for you.
      Happy Fish Keeping,
      Don

I purchased 15KG of Biohome over a year ago. I didn’t want to leave a review until I allowed some time to see if it helped reduce nitrates. I have two tanks running Biohome. One is a 125G with two FX6 filters. Both filled with 5KG for a total of 10KG of Biohome. The other is a 75G with one FX6 with 5KG of Biohome. The 125G is a Discus only tank with 18 Discus. The 75G is a mixed African cichlid tank with Peacocks, haps, mbunas, tropheus, Acaras, Calvus and Compressiceps. The Biohome media in both tanks is more than enough to handle the overstocked fish. All that said, my ammonia and nitrites consistently run at zero, however, my nitrates typically run between 20-30 ppm. That tells me that the anaerobic bacteria within the center of the Biohome media are not thriving to bring down the nitrates. I do weekly 80% water changes on both tanks. I’m a bit disappointed because I invested a lot of money in the Biohome in order to control the nitrates. After learning more about anaerobic bacteria, they need an oxygen deprived environment and in a filter where the flow rate is below 50gph in order to grow so my thinking is that the gph on my FX6’s are to high for the anaerobic bacteria to grow. I also have a Fluval 406 running on each tank with inline Turbo Twist UV lights on them. The 125G has a 36W UV attached to it and the 75G has an 18W UV on it. I have tried both Nitra Zorb (works amazing to reduce nitrates) and Purigen in the 406 filters, but both are expensive and don’t last long. Purigen does not directly reduce nitrates but turns ammonia and nitrites into a non toxic state. Since the flow rate also needs to be low for a UV light to kill parasites, as a test, I have dropped the flow rate on the 406 filters below 50gph and am testing Seachem’s Denitrate which can also grow anaerobic bacteria to see if this will work in helping to reduce nitrates. Another consideration I am thinking about is to reduce the flow rate to 50gph on one of my FX6’s running on the 125G to see if that will then allow the anaerobic bacteria to grow in the Biohome inside that FX6.

    GreatWave’s Response,
    Thomas,
Thank you for the comprehensive report. I’m sorry to hear you haven’t achieved the nitrate reduction you expected. You’re about the fourth or fifth customer out of the thousands we’ve served that have reported this. I assume there are others as well that just haven’t bothered to report, but on the other hand we have a number of reports of excellent results. I hope we will eventually come up with a good explanation for this.
By my records, you purchased a total of 13 kgs of Ultimate in October and November 2018. You may have picked up a couple more kgs somewhere else.
If the FX6s are filled with 10 kgs, it would seem that should be sufficient. 5 kgs should also be enough for the 75 gallon tank, but you’ve indicated your using a 406 on that tank.
I had a couple of 406s for awhile for testing purposes. I was only able to get a little over 2 kgs in them. I show their capacity as 2.3 kgs, which I’m pretty confident is correct. That would only be about 1/2 as much as you’d need for nitrate reduction.
I doubt the UVs are a problem. The exposure to kill bacteria is considerably higher than is required to kill single cell algae and they are only going to affect what’s passing through them. The beneficial bacteria living in Biohome are non-motive, which means they don’t move so I have no idea how the UV could possibly affect them once established.
I also don’t think a flow rate higher than 50 gph is a factor. Regardless of the flow around the media I don’t believe the center of media is seeing anything like that. Certainly the water is continually moving through the media, but with the incredibly small spaces in the Biohome there is no way it is moving very fast.
You mentioned using Purigen. We specifically recommend against using this as it seems to work in opposition to the Biohome. In general, we don’t recommend chemical solutions.
However, sometime ago one of our customers, Adriene reported great results using sugar. You can read that here: https://greatwaveeng.com/adriene-littleton/
The PondGuru also reported: “Two products mentioned by people who have achieved a rapid full cycle are Flourish Excel and Easy Carbo – both have available carbon which seems to enable bacteria to noticeably mature faster, especially the anaerobic bacteria which is often very slow to establish.”
I believe these work on the same principle as Adriene’s glucose. I’ll forward this commentary to my friends in the UK to see if they have any additional comments or wish to correct anything I’ve said.
I hope you’ll keep us updated. As I mentioned I’ve received a few reports of this issue, but have never learned if any of the suggestions we’ve made has done anything to improve the situation.
Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and…
    Happy Fish Keeping,

I purchased the BioHome Ultimate media a little over a month ago and I must say I am truly impressed. Running a Fluvial 407 with three trays filled with this media. It took about a month for the full nitrogen cycle to take affect in my 55 gallon fresh water tank. Two weeks after my last water change, my ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels are showing 0ppm using the API master test kit.

      Michael,
Thanks for the feedback. That’s great news. I’m glad you had such good results. Probably a bit under filtered for a 55 gallon tank. Probably need more like 4 kgs to see nitrate reduction, but you can’t beat 0 ppm. I hope it holds up as your fish load grows.
      Thanks for the order, and…
      Happy Fish Keeping,
      Don

fluval 407 filter…. takes 1 kg per tray when u take your time to place each piece standing on end. it will fit 2 high perfectly. if you want 3 trays filled u need 3 kg unfortunately I only purchased 2 kg….. I will get more when I purchase a 2nd filter.

      Ryan,
You’re a patient man. Thanks for the feedback. Always glad to sell more, but you may become tired to servicing those trays if you find debris getting through to the Biohome. You may be able to service them adequately by simply swishing the little trays in a tub of tank water to remove any debris that you might see on the surface.
Good luck with your Biohome and the 407, and…

      Happy Fish Keeping,

      Don
