Description

BioGravel media is an ideal substrate, but also a highly efficient filter media. Sintered glass is mixture of silica sand and recycled glass fired at high temperature to form rough, porous glass balls. Nearly inert it should not affect pH significantly, although a large volume may raise the pH temporarily.

It supports growth of zooplankton and is the perfect playground for shrimp. It should also work well in:

  • Small DYI Filters

  • Internal Filters

  • HOB Filters

  • Small Canister Filters

  • BiOrb Upgrades

  • Tank Substrate

BioGravel is a small, round media ranging in size from 1/8″-1/2″ in diameter.  1 kg occupies between 57 and 70 cu in depending on your filter size. To see how much your filter requires click on this link: “How Much Do I Need“.

Complimentary Filter Starter Balls (1/4 bag per kg) are shipped with each order to speed beneficial bacteria growth. The media recovers quickly after the use of medications.

Biohome ® allows both nitrifying (aerobic) and denitrifying (anaerobic) bacteria to grow on and through it’s unique structure. This allows it to also control nitrates. Check the Rules of Thumb for Nitrate Reduction to estimate how much you’ll need to reduce the nitrates in your pond or tank.

Biohome ® BioGravel Media is a biological filter media and good mechanical filtration must be provided to insure the water passing through it does not contain any debris that might clog it.

I purchase 11 kilos of media for a project that I am doing. The interaction between Don and myself was fantastic. He responded quickly to all my questions and was a complete professional during my transaction process. Once purchased the media was shipped expeditiously and arrived in great shape. I am completely satisfied and can’t wait to see the results of what my projects creates. Thanks again Don! If I need BioHome Media, I can promise that I will be purchasing it from here.

Don, I finally got the Ammonia down by doing large water changes and vacuuming. Since then I have added an Aqueon Quietflow internal power filter. It fits nicely in to the Biorb. I turned the outlet to the side pointing directly at the heater, it is pretty powerful but since it is directional, doing this lets the fish still swim around in either direction without swimming against the flow. I hope by adding this and continuing water changes I will be able to keep the Ammonia down. Time will tell. Thanks for a great product.

      Vivian,
Glad to hear you got your BiOrb working well. Great idea to enhance the filtration.

I purchased this for my 60L Biorb. The only thing that is not in the perfect range is Ammonia, I am sure this is because I overstocked my tank, and then too many fry were born and thriving. My plants are doing excellent, everything is growing. I have a couple of Ghost Shrimp, and can not believe how large they have grown. Can’t say enough about the BioGravel.
I ordered a second 2 kg from another supplier at a cheaper price, thinking it was a good deal, but their 2kg was a much smaller amount than the same order from you. I will only purchase from you from now on. Planning on getting a larger, 55 gallon, tank next and will want this as substrate in it also. Great product.

      Vivian,
Glad to hear the BioGravel is working so well for you. The fact your ammonia is not zero concerns me a bit. I hope it is very low. It is probably explained by the fact you’ve had a spawning and the filtration in a BiOrb is not very efficient even with Biohome. I’m glad to hear you’re planning on a bigger tank. That should work a lot better if you get a large enough filter.

Remember you need 1.5-2 kgs of Biohome per 26 gallons so that would require a filter that will hold about 4 kgs. The BioGravel substrate will help some, but since there is not a steady flow through it, I wouldn’t count that.

The other sellers of Biohome in the US sell by the pound and a pound is less than half a kilogram so if you got 2 pounds it would be quite a bit less than the 2 kilograms you got from us. Continued success with your fish and shrimp, and…

      Happy Fish Keeping,
      Don

I am using this in a biorb 30L. I did the foam filters as seen in the upgrade video that reccomended this. It has worked beautifully. I now trust it so much I am buying more for a small back up hospital tank.

      Lisa,
Thanks for the great feedback. I’ve often wondered how the BiOrb upgrade worked. I’m glad to hear it’s working well for you.
      Happy Fish Keeping,
      Don

I purchased the kit for the BiOrb 30L and I have to say this stuff is amazing. I did a fish less cycle and once the tank was cycled I added fish. I do weekly 10% water changes but that’s about it. My water perimeters are always zero, with the exception of PH of course. It’s amazing, So much so that I started another BiOrb for my daughter. Normally I would not concerned using a tank like the BiOrb. The 30L was giving to me as a gift so I did some research on how to make it better. The Biohome Gravel actually make this a safe tank to use. In the 30L I have a Betta and three Cory’s. My daughters tank is only 15L so it only has a Betta.

      Terry,
Thanks for the great feedback. I’ve sold quite a bit of BioGravel for BiOrbs, but this is the first feedback I’ve received. It’s great to hear how well it works. I was concerned how well it could be maintained, but it sounds like that is not really a problem.
      Happy Fish Keeping,
      Don
