Description

BioGravel media is an ideal substrate, but also a highly efficient filter media. Sintered glass is mixture of silica sand and recycled glass fired at high temperature to form rough, porous glass balls. Nearly inert it should not affect pH significantly, although a large volume may raise the pH temporarily.

It supports growth of zooplankton and is the perfect playground for shrimp. It should also work well in:

  • Small DYI Filters

  • Internal Filters

  • HOB Filters

  • Small Canister Filters

  • BiOrb Upgrades

  • Tank Substrate

BioGravel is a small, round media ranging in size from 1/8″-1/2″ in diameter.  1 kg occupies between 57 and 70 cu in depending on your filter size. To see how much your filter requires click on this link: “How Much Do I Need“.

Complimentary Filter Starter Balls (1/4 bag per kg) are shipped with each order to speed beneficial bacteria growth. The media recovers quickly after the use of medications.

Biohome ® allows both nitrifying (aerobic) and denitrifying (anaerobic) bacteria to grow on and through it’s unique structure. This allows it to also control nitrates. Check the Rules of Thumb for Nitrate Reduction to estimate how much you’ll need to reduce the nitrates in your pond or tank.

Biohome ® BioGravel Media is a biological filter media and good mechanical filtration must be provided to insure the water passing through it does not contain any debris that might clog it.

I was skeptical at 1st, but I went ahead and Ordered 12kg of Bio-gravel and used about half in a 14g Aqueon cube paired with an under gravel Filter. (2 inches on top of the plate)
I let the tank run for 2 weeks before adding some of the starter balls to the sponge filter( Theres bio-gravel inside the sponges media chamber as well) and within a month was able to achieve a perfect Cycle. 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites, and 0 nitrates. I even went ahead and bombed the tank with all 3 to see how fast they would consume everything. The numbers were back to 0 within 3 days.
I’m going to be Purchasing more for Every Fish tank I have, and will own in the future. I don’t mind water changes but weekly water changes in my Drought stricken area makes me feel bad.

I recently purchased Biogravel and filters from Greatwave. Prior to my purchase I called Greatwave and spoke with Don. He was extremely helpful and friendly and pointed me in the right direction to upgrade my Biorb filter. My order came to me in 3 days. I was impressed with how fast it was shipped. My Biorb upgrade was simplified by using the instructions on this website. So I cannot attest to the filter functioning as of yet because it’s only been set up a week. I will leave another review when I have ran the Biorb some time. So the amount of Biogravel was sufficient to do the upgrade. Thanks Don for your help.

      Kerry,
Thanks for the feedback. I’m glad to hear your BiOrb upgrade went well. I hope it operates well too.
      Have a great 2022. Stay safe, and…

I purchased 1 kg of biogravel for my 15L biOrb Tube, along with 2 medium foam filters and a package of starter balls. Don went above & beyond to help me perform an upgrade to the tiny filter on my biOrb. His communication skills are amazing and he obviously loves the work he does. My small-scale project was treated with priority & genuine interest.

I am very happy with the results! The product looks natural and beautiful. More importantly, my water parameters nearly seem miraculous. My tank never experienced dangerously high spikes during the four weeks of cycling before adding one betta fish. The water parameters continue to be great & my new betta is thriving. Five-star customer service & products!

      Tammy,
Thanks for the kind words. I love your Betta and what you did with that small tank. We’ve got your report up on your Customer Page. I hope other BiOrb owners find it helpful.

Have a Happy New Year. Stay safe in 2021 and enjoy your new tank!
      Happy Fish Keeping,
      Don

I have been running the biOrb bottom filter upgrade in both a 15l and 30l for several months. The upgrade is nothing short of a miracle for the terribly flawed mini filter the orbs come with as stock. I removed all the stuff from the tiny round bottom filter and put the starter balls and largest gravel in the filter and installed. I cut and put the foams in and topped with tank water rinsed biogravel. Both orbs were initially set up this way and were started with cycled well established tank water. Both are fresh water and support thriving live low light plants. The smaller orb sports two amano shrimp that are apparently getting busy in there. The bigger orb shelters a mean female betta and her live foods. Both have snail crews. The water quality in both is as near perfict as I could ever hope for and could never achieve with the stock set up on a previous biOrb attempt(we called it the deathstar). I do a 25% water change every two weeks and have lightly vacumed the gravel twice in the first 3 months. The tanks are beautiful, smell like fresh spring water, and get 100% positive comments from everyone that sees them. Go ahead and try this upgrade if you have any kind of bottom filter, or pop it in a canister or hob, thats my next project! We are going to try a saltwater reef orb using the foams, biohome marien ultimate, biogravel and a biobrick as the base. With a heater, reef light, some gulf aquacultured live rock and included hitchhikers, a hydor nano pump on a timer and the upgraded UNS Delta 60 unit Don has refurbished the tank should start up and cycle great. It will be called The SaltyBall and we will post a review after a few months.

      Ben,
Thanks for the informative review. This is the first feedback I’ve received on the BiOrb Upgrade and was glad to hear that it works great. Very good news.

I’ll be very interested in hearing how the Delta 60 works for you in the reef tank. Sounds like a great project.

      Stay safe, and…

      Happy Fish Keeping,
      Don
