For some time we’ve been selling convoluted filter foam. After more than a year of testing we are transitioning to flat foam. Our tests have revealed no advantage to using convoluted foam and we’ve observed some issues.
The tips of the convolutions are pretty fragile. We’ve found that after about 18 months bacteria have eaten the tips away. While we did our best to obtain high quality foam, in reality we had no idea where it was coming from or if it was coming from the same manufacturer each time.
Our new foam is manufactured by EMW Filtertechnik GmbH in Germany. They manufacturer foam for many of the leading filter manufacturers such as Eheim and Fluval.
Because we receive this foam in sheets that are 39″x39″ these smaller filters will now be 6 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ in size. Hopefully, this will allow them to be used in more filters without requiring you to purchase the larger sheets.
Biohome media should only be placed behind an effective mechanical filter. This is usually open pore reticulated filter foam.
While open pore foam is readily available and quite inexpensive, you should be aware that most of this foam it is not suitable for use in an aquarium filter. All foam used in packaging and construction must contain flame inhibitors. This is impregnated in the foam and will leach out over time and is not something you want in your aquarium water.
GreatWave Filter Foam is the highest quality filter foam and we are now sure it will be the highest quality time after time. Better yet it is also cheaper. We have tested it for some time and will continue to do so to insure it is the most effective mechanical filtration you can buy.
The 6 1/2″ Coarse Foam Filter sheet is 1″ thick 10 ppi blue foam. The foam can easily be cut to the appropriate size and shape for your filter with a sharp knife.
Coarse Foam should be placed in your filter where the water enters.
