Description

The name says it all. Biohome Ultimate Media is the ultimate media for canister, HOB and sump filters.

1 kg occupies about 72 cu in. To see how much your filter requires return to the Home page and click on the link at the top, “How Much Do I Need”.

Biohome Ultimate is identical to Mini with the addition of trace elements, including iron and maganese, to support beneficial bacteria growth. Bacteria growth in Ultimate is very fast to control ammonia and nitrite.

Complimentary Filter Starter Balls (1/4 bag per kg)  are shipped with each order to speed filter maturity. It recovers quickly after the use of medications.

Biohome allows both nitrifying (aerobic) and denitrifying (anaerobic) bacteria to grow on and through it’s unique structure. This allows it to also control nitrates. Check the Rules of Thumb for Nitrate Reduction to estimate how much you’ll need to reduce the nitrates in your pond or tank.

Ultimate Media is a biological filter media and good mechanical filtration must be provided to insure the water passing through it does not contain any debris that might clog it.

Please let us know if you have any questions or comments.

    great product

  2. Mike (verified owner)

Ordered 4.5 pounds of BioHome Ultimate a few days ago and had it delivered in only a few days, thought that was great shipping time.

Put the BioHome Ultimate in my Fluval 406 Canister filter. Filter has 4 media trays, bottom one I left with just the foam filter and the other 3 trays I filled with BioHome Ultimate. They also included for free about 10 Bio starter balls, thought that was cool of them. I put 3-4 balls in each tray directly on top the BioHome to help establish the Bio Colony faster.

This is a 55 Gallon Cichlid Tank and we was having a major problem with Ammonia from 15 Cichlids in the tank and it being a tank only 2 months old. Time will tell if this filter media can do the job and keep my tank ammonia free once the bacteria colonies start growing in the BioHome.

I left my Fluval 110 Hang on Back filter still on the tank working also, at least till the canister has been running for awhile to take over the job completely. The Fluval 110 sure was not doing the job by itself and why I bought the 406.

If this new setup works out I will update and let you know how the new media is doing. But from what I read about BioHome Ultimate it should do well. Going to rate this high for now after seeing it first hand and reading about it on web, if things change I will let you know.

I gotta say that this is by far the best media I have ever used. I have been running biohome ultimate in my Marineland C360 canister for several months and decided to purchase an additional 2kg for my new Marineland C360. Along with running biohome, I use Chemi-Pure Blue and my water parameters couldn’t be any better. Absolute magic! Matrix and other media doesn’t even come close to what this has to offer. I challenge all of you to give it a try! Check out my YouTube channel as well. Thanks! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4DcU5PXN7u1VDx7yvyZYfw

  5. Dario

very excited to put the New Maxi media in my sump looks amazing compared to the other stuff . Don from GreatWave Engineering was very helpful. I was very exited to meet him.

  6. Cindy

Purchased a house with a 125 built in the wall freshwater tank. I thought it looked alittle dirty but once we moved in I learned all about ammonia, nitrates, and why algae was growing faster than a race car in this tank. (Never owned an aquarium before.) So with massive web researching, purchasing cleaning tools and testing kits, I went to work. The tank finally went to 0 ammonia and from off the charts nitrates to a steady 80. Just couldn’t seem to get the nitrates down more than 60 to 80. When I saw several of the Pondguru videos I learned my Eheim canister was set up wrong so I ordered the ultimate media. When it came in I cleaned out the canister and left one small bag of media that had been in there and placed foams and 2 pounds of ultimate. I couldn’t believe it….in 2 weeks my nitrates were down to 5. I had never had a five, and pretty much tested every day ammonia and nitrates since moving into the house since I was working on getting the tank cleaned up. I have since made a moving bed filter with ultimate media in a fake rock formation and now my nitrates are 0 to barely showing color. So, this stuff works. I will not use any other media.

Great service, fast shipping, and very competitive pricing. I definitely recommend Great Wave Engineering.
I received my order of BioHome Ultimate filter media 2 days after placing my order. Great Wave had the best pricing I have found for this product.
When the package arrived, it had an instructions page included and a nice note thanking me for my order, both of which were appreciated.
I have not tried BioHome products before, but have heard very good things. I am going to add the filter media to my system this weekend and will post another review in a few weeks, once I know how it affects my nitrate levels.

  8. Earnest (verified owner)

After watching PondGuru on YouTube and the detailed information he gave about Biohome Ultimate I made my first purchase of the product. I placed it in my Marineland 330 HOB filter in my 100 gallon community tank and 3 other filters in various other fish tanks. That first purchase was received on October 25, 2014, it is now January 16, 2015.

I am happy to report that ammonia, nitrites, and nitrate all read zero!! I’ve never seen a product that could actually reduce nitrate levels. That to me was absolutely taboo. The only thing I knew to do to reduce nitrates was regular weekly water changes. That is quite a job when you have over 180 gallons of water stretched across 4 different tanks. Now I don’t feel as pressed to do my water changes on an exact day. I have wiggle room which is amazing. I only do water changes now to elimate mulm build up and loss of mineral content.

This product is absolutely with out a doubt the best media out there and I will not use anything but this!! On top of that Don Chamberlain is very quick to respond to any request and by far surpasses any customer service I’ve ever seen. GreatWave is awesome and so is PondGuru! I wouldn’t know half the things I know now without his detailed videos of the nitrogen cycle and many other fish related facts. Thanks to you both for helping me help my little fishy friends! More fish lovers should know about this product…

  9. Nathaniel (verified owner)

Been using Biohome ultimate for six months in my gold fish tank with a hang on the back filter. Even with limited media space this product kept my levels low. Recently upgrade my filtration to a large canister filter for increased mechanical filtration, and being able to use even more of this great product! Best part is the customer service and fast delivery, thank you.

  10. Keith (verified owner)

I first bought Bio Home Ultimate Media off Ebay from the Pond Guru. That was very high shipping costs and it took two weeks to receive. Watching his videos I heard about GreatWave in the US. As soon as I saw they had another supply I bought 5 KG. This is by far the best media I’ve ever used and will never use anything else again.

  11. Jenn (verified owner)

Love Biohome Ultimate media! We have it in all our canisters and in our Aquaclear HOBs. Our tank parameters remain excellent with this media.

Great Wave Engineering is brilliant to work with. They’re very responsive. Their customer service is excellent!

  12. jason (verified owner)

I first seen this from the pond guru on Youtube. I read all the reviews and decided to order some I have to say thanks for the free starter balls and the super fast shipping !! I must say one of the best things I have seen in a very long time was the personal letter that I received. I truly believe this is a great product and I am truly happy !! This is a great company hands down . I believe in customer service and you people have it.
Thank you for a great experience! !!

  13. Adam (verified owner)

Quick review of shipping. Ordered on a Sunday, shipped on Tuesday, arrived at my house on Thursday!! That is awesome. I’m currently upgrading from a 55 to a 150 so I can’t comment on performance just yet but from what I have heard I’m sure there won’t be any issues. This stuff looks and feels amazing. So far very pleased. Thank you.

  14. Michael (verified owner)

Installed 3 kg of biohome ultimate in my new canister on Jan 22. I did a fishless cycle using a heavy load of ammonia because I needed to move a large oscar to this tank. Tank cycled in three and half weeks even with heavy load. I attribute this to biohome ultimate and starter gel balls. Tank levels have been perfect since moving oscar to new home. This media has preformed way above my expectations. Don at Greatwave has been very helpful and even sent me samples of mechanical media to try. Will install it on my first canister maintenance. Thank you for great service and product.

  15. Hung Nguyen (verified owner)

I bought 4 kg of this Biohome-Ultimate media 3 months ago. I transfer my 20 red claw crayfishes from a 90 gallon tall tank into a 240 gallon tank. At first, I was only doing regular water changes every week and not running my FX-5 filter. When I noticed the crayfishes not being as active and not eating as much, I decided to test the water. The Ammonia and Nitrite levels were off the charts. I decided to try the Biohome-Ultimate media after watching Pond Guru on Youtube and reading the reviews on here. I filled the 2 bottom trays with 2 kg of Biohome-Ultimate and the top tray with mechanical filter pads. The outer layer of all three trays was filled with the FX-5 sponge filter. Literally after I installed the FX-5 and did a 65% water change, the Ammonia was reading 3 ppm and the Nitrite was still reading over 5 ppm. After one week the Ammonia levels had dropped to 0 ppm while the Nitrite was down to 3-4 ppm. After week 2 ammonia and Nitrite were both reading 0 ppm. Nitrate level seems to be stable at around 40 ppm. The readings for ammonia, Nitrite, and Nitrate all stayed the same after 1 month of use and no water change. There is no such thing as rotten food for crayfishes so I always overfeed them, and for the water to stay at this level is beyond excellent. I plan to make a 4 x 275 gallon tote system to raise these crayfish for food and will make a 50 gallon drum bio-filter with this stuff. Highly recommended! Although the letter that comes with the shipment is nothing but a computer generated copy that I don’t care for, I do appreciate the fast shipping and excellent quality of the filter media. Will buy again in the future.

  16. Garry (verified owner)

Very pleased with not only the product but the service. I have been using it in all my filters and even in the newer tanks I have had no spikes or issues with the water parameters once the cycle is completed. This media will make the hobby that much better, not to mention providing the ideal conditions for the fish to thrive, grow and color up like never before! I have nothing but the best to say about this company, it’s service and support clearly put the customer first. Thanks again Don and crew. Highly recommended product and company.

i cannot say anything about how the product works as i just received my first shipment of biohome ultimate. however, the service that don gave me and the patience he showed were unbelievable. he spent time explaining to me all the nuances of both the media and fish keeping in general. i cannot say enough good things about Don and greatwave. THANK YOU!

  18. Jamos (verified owner)

I received the biohome ultimate on time two days just like it said. So far pleased with this product. It has only been two weeks so can’t say much long term. Have not had any spikes water parameters are good. Really good service thank you for the bio balls. I actually just ordered more highly recommend this product. Thank you Don and Greatwave.

I purchased this product from the Pond Guru a few years ago before it was sold in the US,, It has been GREAT,Peraameters are always good, Nitrate stays at 5ppm,, as a real testament to this product I used it in a Aquon10 HOB for my 10g breeder/fry tank and at one point had 25 fish in there,,all levels stayed at 0ammo> 0nitrite> and 5-10 nitrate..If that’s not saying something,,That why I just ordered some more for my Hydor250 canister for my 55g,,,Biohome ultimate is the best media out there. BAR NONE….

      Harvey,
Thanks for the kind words. I use USPS because their rates for Priority Mail are simply the best by quite aways, and when their service works the way it is supposed to, it is pretty awesome. I have had three or four occasions when they went widely astray. However, in order to deliver Biohome media at the lowest possible cost, I can’t see changing shippers as long as they continue delivering as well as they currently do.

I’m very glad you’re happy with the product and service. Have a great summer, and…

      Happy Fish Keeping,
      Don

Love love love my 5k new biohome ultimate media , I have been having ammonia problems with one of my tanks after adding in the media my tank is doing great! I wish I bought this when I 1st started my hobby.

  23. Lewis (verified owner)

Outstanding media, can’t be beat. Massive surface area, quick biological seeding, helped by the included Filter Starter Balls, just excellent on all fronts. I’m using them in both a Fluval 306 canister and an Aquaclear 50 back of tank filter, gin clear water, happy fish, happy plants. The best I’ve ever used, better than Biomax, and as good or better than Eheim Substrat, you can’t get better media. Highly recommended!

  24. Donald (verified owner)

Everything about this BH Ultimate media is top notch. It not only takes removes Nitrites and ammonia but goes the extra step of helping to control nitrates which a lot of media can’t do. I tried 6 kinds of media in a two month test and found none better. The only reason I took off one star is that it is quite expensive to purchase and ship.

  25. Piers Farrell (verified owner)

I added this media to my Sun Sun canister filter (replacing the plastic bio balls) . After seven days my nitrate was zero, ZERO! I’ve never had zero nitrate in my 100gal tank. This stuff is amazing, glad I bought 6 kg of it. Next it goes in the hang on filter on the 20 gal tank. My discus have never been so happy!

  26. Jesse T Brown (verified owner)

Very quick delivery of BioHome media with 10 starter balls. My aquarium is a new 30gal tank – no fish yet. A 5 star rating is given based on other reviews – I believe my ammonia – nitrites & nitrates will be kept under control – time will tell. Jesse…

Ordered some Biohome Ultimate for my canister filter. I have 3 trays so in my bottom tray I have my mechanical and the next 2 trays I have a small amount of Biomax which came with the filter and the rest of that tray and the top tray I have the Biohome. I am very pleased by how fast it shipped to me. They included some bio starter balls which is very nice. I am very excited to see how the product does and I believe it will live up to its name as the best media you can buy. I will be buying some of the Biohome Ultra to put in a media back for my hob filter. They include a letter with the order. First company I have ever seen do that. Very great customer service and I am a customer from here on out.

Great Media! And thank you Don for great Service. I’ll be passing the word around about Bio Home

  29. Don (verified owner)

The Biohome Media line of products is a must have for every aquarium owner. I am a “newbie” to the lifestyle and take pride in learning how to better my knowledge and understanding for fun and safe fish keeping. After watching many of Richard’s Pond Guru videos over and over I decided to modify my HOB with 3 stage sponge media for efficient mechanical filtration and Biohome Ultimate Media along with Filter Starter Balls for superior biological filtration. It is AMAZING to see the difference these products make to the water quality allowing the fish to thrive in an ideal aquarium setup. Thanks to Richard and Don for making these fine products available in the USA.

    Fast shipping!!

For how much you get it is not that expensive at all really, great quality, best media I’ve ever used, can be used in both submerged chambers or trickle chambers depending on what filtering needs you have,
I have had it running in my tank for 6+ months now, I used to have REALLY HIGH NITRATES, after I put this media in my trickle chamber and submerged chamber I could watch my nitrates decrease weekly after the media was established. !! I used to hardly be able to keep my nitrates below 40 PPM even with weekly 20-30% water changes.
I’m now down to a water change every two or three weeks and my nitrates stay between 5-12 PPM. Thank you for such a good product!!
Just make sure you have good mechanical filtration leading to the media. It will become ‘clogged’ if you do not have good mechanical filtration. Remember this is a very porous material so small debris will like to collect in it, if inadequate mechanical filtration is present.

    Best bio media EVER!!!!!
I have a 150 gal tank with way too many african cichlids (65) and my water quality couldn’t be better!!!

  32. Robert (verified owner)

Bio-Home Ultimate gives you a 0/0/0 ammonia/nitrite/nitrate water. Ideal for sensitive soft water fish from the Amazon (Apistos). I use it in my hang-on back filters. You need to have only sponges and a large amount of this media in you filters. It does not affect the hardness (TDS) of the water. In one word “ULTIMATE”… the best biologic media on the market. Don’t even bother with any other bio-media. One time I kept about 70-80 juvenile Apistogrammas in a 5G (20 L) tank, my water was still 0/0/0 and the fish stayed healthy with this filtration system. Don does a fantastic job with customer service, a very nice guy!

I just received my 3kg order of biohome ultimate today 1 Dec 2015 so my 5 stars are for the amazing customer service and shipping time I’ve received. I loaded the top two trays of my sunsun 304B my levels are 0/0/10. I will be updating this review as the biohome does it’s thing. To be continued…….

Thank Don great talking to you. I just add 6K of this media to my two fx6 fluval canister filter for my 220 gal Frontosa African cichlids. I filled bottom, middle trays up and a little bit in top tray with my sponges still on top. I have abt 15 piece left over. I then took one of my fx6 and replace the old media back in the middle tray only for support of the new media. So sometime later I’ll replace that tray with ultimate media and report back on it. Thanks again.

  36. David (verified owner)

Just got my sunsun 404b added 4kg to three trays. Going to buy more media cause you could squeeze 2kg per tray since the trays are big.

i received my order very quickly. I put Ultimate in my whisper60 HOB on my 40g turtle tank. Right away the odor from the water had disappeared. Its been 2 days and still no odor. I do plan on getting more ultimate for all my tanks which have canisters on them. So I’ll need to order 10k to fill all of them. I can’t wait. Thank you Don and PondGuru for such a wonderful product. I am thinking of ordering some of your media and I just have one question. Do you think they will make ultimate media for a reactor for marines in the future?

    • newfish

      Phil,
Biohome has just introduced two marine versions, Ultimate Marine and MAXI Marine, that might be suitable for your application.

Battled cloudy water problem for couple of month without any success until came across Biohome Ultimate Media on YouTube. After re-setting my filters EHEIM Professional II and SunSun 303 with this GREAT product water in my 80 gl cichlid tank cleared up within ~3 days and stays crystal clear since that. I recommended this product to a friend of mine who had a similar problem (solved!) and now I’m buying more for my second tank.

Thank you for a great product and prompt delivery!

I use this mixed with the pro, and by far best media ever. I have a Api canister filter xp2 on my 75gal freshwater(Water is always clear even with high fish load), I have a high fish load and with just one of the two buckets full it has handled everything my fish can throw at it! NOTE If you have a rena xp1 or xp2 I would highly recommend going with The Biohome pro because it is thiner and can fit way more in just one bucket. Also to fit it in the xp1 go with the pro and make sure to buy the bags to make service way better. Seller has the greatest customer service I’ve ever seen. Ultimate great for large filters!

      Max,
Thanks for the great reviews. Glad to hear all of our products are working so well for you.

As everyone as stated this is the best filter media you can find. The price is reflects the quality and I personally feel like I am getting the better end of the deal as this stuff is incredible. It is extremely porous and it doesn’t get mucked up like many other filter media. It made a world of difference in the removal of toxins in my aquarium but also with stability with the water conditions. There is no other media I would recommend other than this.

  46. Darnell Felder (verified owner)

I have been using Biohome Ultimate for a little over a year in a DIY filter driven by a Cobalt power head with a bio sponge on the intake. This media cycled fairly quickly and has done a fantastic job at keeping the water quality levels right on the money. It stands up to all the waste my goldfish produce without batting an eye. I’ve had a new 55 gallon set up for almost two months now with a well reviewed hang on back filter that shows no signs of cycling any time soon. I’ve decided to take out all the useless media in it and replace it with Biohome. It’s proven its worth and I’d highly recommend it.

    • newfish

Thanks for the review. I’m very glad to hear the Ultimate has been working so well for you for over a year.

I received my package a few days ago and I’m so excited to try it in my 29 gal with goldfish. I had a lot of issues keepkng nitrate below 80ppm. Some info in the internet says that water from the faucet can have ammonia bit I tested my water and it always show zero. I have a cascade 1000 filter and after watching a Youtube video from Pond Guru, I decided to give it a try with the product. The setting of my mechanical filters was so wrong, so now they are sort of good: in the bottom tray I’m using the ceramic ringas as the base (to keep the “muck” in the bottom, then the biosponge that came in the filter as the coarse, and two filter pads, second tray I put another coarse filter and on top of that another filter pad and the third on has the biohome media (I bought 500g, but need to get more). Coincidentally, I bought 4 more fish (3 comets and 1 pleco) and made the mistake of not quarantined the new fish. Right now one of the new fish has white slime and the tail is starting to “rot”. I’m medicating the whole tank, but I’m afraid that it will kill the bacteria I received with the product. 5 stars for the service….love the letter that came with the shipment. It felt so personal and things like this does not happen with businesses. Thank you Don for your excellent customer service. If anybody is reading my post, and have an advice or suggestion, it will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    • newfish

      Monica,
I hope it works out for you. I think it will, but you do need a bit more media. The Cascade will hold 2 kg if you fill two trays. Your latest order will get you almost there.

If you don’t think that’s too expensive, that’s what I’d recommend. That should be enough to begin lowering your nitrate after awhile.

You’ve got scads of mechanical filtration in there now, but it doesn’t make much sense to have Coarse, Fine, then more Coarse and Fine. I’d put all of the Coarse at the bottom and then the Fine mats above that. With so much of the foam and pads in there it is also serving as biological media. If you get more Biohome, you could gradually replace the Fine pads with Biohome. If you do fill up two trays with Biohome, I’d suggest you wind up with a layer of Coarse and then fill up the rest of the bottom tray with the Fine pads or you might spring for a Medium sheet to add to the bottom tray between the Coarse and the Fine.

You didn’t mention which medication you’re using. Most won’t really affect the filter, but some do suggest bypassing the filter for awhile. As I hope you’ve learned, it is always wise to quarantine new fish. I’d suggest getting a small tank for that purpose.

I’d put some inexpensive fish in it. Not too many, just enough to keep the filter alive and then you can place new fish in there for a month or so before moving them to your good tank.

It’s also important not to get carried away. I know how difficult that is, but adding new fish at the same time you’re changing something else is a bit of a recipe for disaster. Even with a quarantine tank, adding 4 fish at once would be problematic. That big an increase in fish load would probably overload the system and result in spikes of ammonia an/or nitrite.

Better to take your time and get only one or two fish at time. Check them out and when everything looks OK, you can move them into your good tank and get another one or two.

Thanks for the new order. Hope your fish get well soon, and…

      Happy Fish Keeping,
      Don

So excited to be using the Biohome Mini Ultra media in my new Cascade 1000. I have had various sizes of aquariums over the years and my largest is my current 55-gallon that was in the basement/family room where it has been for the last 11 years. My health declined to the extent that the stairs in my home had become a problem and doing regular water changes was quite a chore. I knew that I needed to move this aquarium to a new location but I did not want to disturb the happy stable fish by moving them so I patiently waited. Most of my fish were 15+ years old and as they slowly died of old age I did not replace them and once all were gone I moved the tank upstairs into my home’s entryway.
I have to confess that my aquariums over the years have been controlled by a regular air pump and an underground filter with the corner air tubes and air stone. Yes, an underground filter!! So archaic.
After draining my tank and removing all gravel to get to the filtration system the gunk at the bottom of the tank was amazing. There was so much debris (11 years worth) that I am amazed the water was so clear and also understand how cloudy it would get during a water change, but the biological part worked perfectly all my fish had been stress and disease free.
I knew that I once my tank was moved I was going to install a new “modern” filtration system and am very pleased with the Cascade 1000. Upon seeing the link for Great Wave Engineering I checked out the site. The videos were so beneficial and the explanation of how the media works was phenomenal. After having fish for over 40 years I learned so much while watching “The Pondguru”. He sold me on the importance of Biohome media and I did not hesitate on purchasing this product. I replaced the filtration media that came with the Cascade 1000 (which had the directions on how to set up the filter media all wrong) with the Biohome Mini Ultra media. I experimented and found out that if you stand the little Mini Ultra “logs” upright and fit them upright all across the tray until the tray is full then lay more in rows on the top of the standing ones you can get more media into the tray instead of just pouring the media across the bottom of the tray. I filled both trays this way and sprinkled the bio balls over both trays. Put the ceramic media that came with the Cascade in the very bottom, followed by the coarse, medium and fine filters, then the two trays of Biohome put on the lid and closed the top tight.
I have had the Biohome in my Cascade doing a fishless cycle now for 5 days. I had the Cascade 1000 running for 4 weeks before switching over to Biohome; my pH was through the roof and the other readings were all wrong as well. Water conditioners / stabilizers did nothing to improve the water.
My pH after switching to the Biohome Media is measuring 7.4, Ammonia 0.25, Nitrite has dropped from 5.0ppm to 2.0ppm and Nitrate from 80ppm to 40ppm IN 5 DAYS. This media is amazing!!! It is everything it is advertised to be and MORE! I can now get me 5 little hardy Zebra Danios to help with the cycling process.
Thank you all at Great Wave Engineering for your dedication to creating a product which I feel works 100% exactly as described to assist aquarium and pond enthusiasts all over.

      Judith,
Thanks for the great and comprehensive comment. I was very happy to see you provided some actual data. I’m thrilled the media has worked so well for you. Happy Fish Keeping,

I did a review about almost a month ago, and I’m happy to report that my nitrate’s level went down to 20ppm. Without using biohome, my levels were between 80ppm to almos 120ppm, and I was doing 50% water changes every week. I read in different places that tap water may contribute to this, but I tested the water and everything was 0. After two weeks of having the product (and after ordering more to fill my canister filter baskets), the nitrates went down to 40 ppm and today I did my weekly water change of 25% (I didn’t do it last week) and the levels were 20ppm. Some people are skeptical that nitrates level can’t be reduced without weekly water changes (and I was one), but after this, I’m a believer. Thank you Pondguru for recommending such a wonderful product and to Don for carrying the product and for your wonderful customer service.

      Hey Monica,
Thanks for the follow through. That’s great news. It’s super that the product is working so well for you.

Update: It’s been 9 days since I first did a BioHome review. Two weeks since I started using BioHome Mini Ultra. My readings were staying the same. pH 7.6 Ammonia 0.25ppm Nitrite 2.0ppm Nitrate 20ppm. These readings were awesome compared to what I had pre-BioHome but something was holding up the complete process. My Nitrite had spiked but nothing was leveling out.
I went back and watched the BioHome videos over, over, over. Then it hit me… my substrate was gravel. I changed over to sand with an 80% water change and almost immediately my levels dropped to: pH 6.4 Ammonia 0.25ppm Nitrite 0.25 Nitrate almost 5.0. I have two old ornaments that I thing are leeching out so I am going to replace them and I know my tank will be optimal after that.
Thank you for this product, the videos, and the opportunity to have happy healthy fish with minimal upkeep. Pond guru you were so right on regarding the sand vs gravel debate…sand has worked for me!!

I have not yet purchased this but I am very close to do so. How do I drop the oxygen in the filter (or any other place) to < 0.5 mg/l and not kill my fish/livestock? Do I burry it in a sandbed? And if so, how deep, and how do I get water to flow through the media? Or should I put it in a reactor and run it at a very slow rate? I am very much interested to learn about this media and use it.

    • newfish

      Babak,
I assume you are talking about nitrate reduction. There is no need for you to try to drop the oxygen level anywhere in the system. As I suspect you know, that is about the last thing in the world you’d want to do, as oxygen is critical to ammonia and nitrite elimination, not to mention critical for your fish and any plants you may have.

The oxygen reduction required for nitrate reduction is a natural effect resulting from the construction of the media. Biohome is extremely porous. Near the surface and for some distance into the media there is plenty of oxygen to support nitrosomonas and nitrobacter bacteria to consume ammonia and nitrite and joy of joy produce nitrate.

However, in the center of the media oxygen levels are very low, allowing anaerobic nitrospira bacteria to begin to multiply. Unfortunately, these bacteria are much less active than the aerobic bacteria so you should not expect nitrate reduction to occur in less than 4-6 months, although results have been reported in much less time.

Also, because of this slow growth much more media is required to achieve nitrate reduction than would be required to eliminate ammonia and nitrite. You should have 1.5-2 kgs of Biohome for every 26 gallons of water in the system to achieve nitrate reduction.

I hope this answers your question. If not you can contact me at don@greatwaveeng.com for further discussion. Thanks for your interest, and…
      Happy Fish Keeping,

I installed this media with a 55 and 90 gallon around 6 months ago. Both fluval canister filters. The 406 and fx6. Both tanks the nitrates dropped off months ago. My water is always in perfect condition chemically and clear, even with water changes ever 2-3 months. If I neglect it, the glass and gravel get dirty, but the water stays perfectly clear. No more algy breakouts. I plan on the future to build a biological swimming pool with this media. I’m a customer for life.

    • newfish

      Chris,
Thanks for the feedback. I’m glad to see Biohome has reduced you nitrate. I think I’d do water changes a little more often if possible, but glad the media is helping keep the tank running so well. Happy Fish Keeping!

So…I’m worried about my Chiclid/Oscars – I’ve been running a 20gal tank (Aqueon 30 QuietFlow, with two small Oscars and a Dempsy which are all outgrowing the tank quickly (poor planning). I decided I need to invest in a bigger tank quicker then I expected. I purchased a 55 gal, filled it with new tap and pulled water out of the 20 gallon (about 10 total), and added a Cascade 1000 canister to my new tank. I watched Pondguru do his “guru-ing” on Utube and decided I’d fill my top canister rack with Biohome, above gloss, course pads, above Fluval mechanical filt media. It’s day two and I haven’t tested the levels just yet…I have a few questions..
Please keep in mind I am new to the aquarist community.
Should I run this cycle fishless and expect by adding small amounts of feed (for ammonia) with my established water in my 20 gal that it may cycle quicker? Also, should I add a hardy fish or two to the new tank to jumpstart?
I’m waying the advantages of taking the three fish out of my 20 gal and putting them quicker then usual into the new 55. Thoughts? I’m hoping this Biohome works the way it is reviewed!!!! I’ll keep everyone updated

I have become a convert to Biohome Ultimate media…all in, as they say. First of all, the “How Much Do I Need” is a fantastic “whitepaper” of information on the product and then some with the best instructions I have ever encountered. As far as I can tell, every quality filter system is represented and figuring out individual needs is a snap. Ordering was a snap and delivery was very quick within days.

We have three tanks, a 65, a 26 and a 12 gallon Edge…all Fluval equipped, 306, 206 and Aquaclear 20 HOB respectively, mostly big fancy goldfish. All had established sponges and Fluval biomax media. We took the plunge and ditched the carbon after reading up on it as suggested and filled the trays and compartments as directed per Greatwave’s instruction…the only deviation we took was to distribute the biomax balls in all three applications. For the Aquaclear HOB unit, we got a zippered media bag and added the existing biomax then simply snapped as many Biohome Ultimates in half to fill the allowable space. Within a week or two of this review, the 306 will be replaced by a 406 on the 65 gallon and the plan is to transfer the media over and add the remaining Biohome from our order, with any left over amount eventually replacing the remaining biomax media at which point we will then be 100% Biohome Ultimate. We did use the starter balls and have our fingers crossed that the magic voodoo of bacteria will do its thing.

Since we are not replacing all media or cycling new tanks, the current transition has gone very smoothly and water parameters are well within normal acceptable ranges. Crystal clear to be exact. All three tanks get weekly changes; the hope is these can start to get less intense and less stressful for our big babies. This is good because a) we love them and b) replacements can be expensive!

So far we couldn’t be happier and we hope this leap of faith is in line with the testimony and great reviews the product has had. As for the vendor, Mr. Chamberlain, it is nice to know that customer service and attention, even when stupid questions do get to him from the likes of me, is still alive.

I have a 55 gallon tank with a Fluval 406 and a large sponge filter for a slightly overstocked tank with some plants and driftwood. I like over filtration and vouch for it because it makes me feel at ease that my water quality is pristine. I also do weekly 15-20% water changes. After researching and watching Pondguru Youtube videos, I decided to take the plunge and try out this infamous bio media. It seemed that everyone who reviewed this stuff swears by it and gives it high praise. For my first stages of canister filtration, I did what was recommended by Pondguru and left in the coarse and medium sponges that the Fluval 406 came with and just added a couple fine polishing pads (Also note that I threw out my carbon). Then in my next tray I have a full tray of established Fluval biomax that I also left in. The last 2 trays were intended for the Biohome ultimate. I initially ordered 500 grams thinking that it would be enough but I was wrong, so I will be ordering more and filling the last 2 trays up! I did split the 500 grams to the last 2 trays and threw in the bio gel balls as well. So far with the amount and setup I currently have, my tank seems to be running fine and water parameters are normal (not that it wasn’t before), but I do believe this stuff should do justice and get the job done. The stuff looks great and feels great. Biohome is extremely porous and I do believe that it is currently the best bio media available in the market today.

      Joseph,

I ordered Biohome Ultimate and a package of starter balls a couple of months ago, and GreatWave’s costumer service earned them five stars even if their products did not live up to the hype, but they did. Excited about finding the perfect media for my Fluval 306 and thrilled that I would be able to order it though my fiance’s Amazon account because I just hate filling out the card info for the thousandth time, I placed an order for the Biohome Ultimate before I decided to get a full package of starter balls to go along with it. I then placed the order for the filter balls, resigning myself to having wasted the shipping cost. But I didn’t know how great GreatWave is; not only did they notice the mistake I had made, package the orders together, and refund my the savings on shipping but they sent a very nice note to my fiance (who’s amazon account it was but who would never be such a irresponsible shopper).

I have been waiting to write a review until I saw what the balls and media could do; I am very impressed! First let me say that I’ve never cycled a tank before or done any fish keeping so it’s difficult for me to judge just how effective the starter balls are; I’m going off of what I’ve read about how long it takes to cycle a tank with no seed materials. I set up a 55gal with the Fluval 306 (only one basket of biological filtration at first) for a fishless cycle and, after wasting a week trying to use a lot of fish food and getting absolutely no readings, dosed ammonia up to 4ppm, in five days i was seeing nitrites and the 4ppm is down to zero five days after that. At this point when I dosed back up to 3-4ppm it was all nitrite by morning. A week later I started seeing significant nitrates and I did a very big water change, within four days of the water change 4ppm ammonia was being processed with no nitrite showing up the next morning. Over this period there had been times when I went a couple of days without dosing ammonia yet the filter never seemed to be any weaker when I put ammonia in, perhaps the starter balls gave the bacteria a steady food source so they did not starve.

Here is where I mess things up, all I can say is that I’m glad there were no fish in the tank when I forgot the dechlorinator for a massive water change; a mistake that I am determined to not make twice. I remembered within five minuets but five minuets is a long time to be poisoning your filter; I had even run the filter on high for a bit to flush all the air out so it knew it had gotten all up in there. In despair, I dosed ammonia up to 4ppm again and saw no definite moment that night. I had written off my filter as dead but when I tested the next morning the ammonia was down to 2ppm and there was no nitrite! By the next day ammonia was at 0.25 and nitrite at 0.5. It took another week to build the filter back up to 3-4ppm ammonia to nitrates in less then 24 hours.

I am now coming back to GreatWave with happy fish and not a whiff of ammonia or nitrites; as well as the confidence that Biohome can protect bacteria from idiots like me (to an extent). I’m coming back to buy more Biohome Ultimate and some filter foam, to fill out the fluval 306 and to set up a Fluval Spec V with InTank filter basket for a betta, as well as some Montmorillonite clay for a shrimp tank that will have sponge filtration.

I was referred here from the youtubes (via pondguru) like I’m sure many others were. I have a 55 gallon tank with six goldfish and one common pleco, using an air-powered sponge filter and a sunsun 302 canister filter in which I have this media and another basket with mixed media and some small round biomedia from another company. I had only been cycling the tank for a couple of weeks when I added the biohome media. I tested the water right before adding the biohome media to the filter and had nominal ammonia as well as moderate/high nitrites and nitrates (the only measurement I specifically remember was the nitrate at around 80 ppm, not good). I’ve had the media in the filter for a little over a month now and I have no ammonia or nitrite readings, with moderate nitrate readings that are going down (and also telling me I need to do more water changes). So, this is doing EXACTLY what I want and I’m happy about that.

    • newfish (verified owner)

      Tim,
Thanks for the feedback. I’m glad to hear you’re getting such good results. It looks like you only got a kilogram of Ultimate. With 55 gallons I’d figure you need closer to 4 kilograms to get nitrate reduction. I’m glad to hear it’s going down. If you don’t get the results you want, you may need to consider getting another filter or putting more Ultimate in your 302.

It looks like it will hold about 2 kgs. But it’s early days yet. The manufacturer does expect to see nitrate reduction for 4 to 6 months, so you may get what you want after a bit. Thanks for getting in touch and for the order, and…

They all pose different challeges, bioholme helps maintaining all the tanks easier. Thanks great product. This is my third order. Not because it is wears out but because I can add more tanks.

      John,
That’s great news. I’m delighted you’ve found it work for a variety of fish. Continued success, and…

I was skeptical as to how well this media would perform compared to time tested methods that always included regular large quantity water changes on my 40g reef tank. I was amazed at the wick effect this has when placing the tip in a sample of water. I replaced all the media in the lower two trays of my 306 canister with Biohome U. The tank this was setup on was only about 2.3 months old so still fairly new. I closely monitored ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels over the last 6 months of running Biohome. The tank is a mixed soft, leather, LPS tank that is also fairly heavily stocked and I do feed the livestock heavily and many of the corals get supplemental feedings. I saw a slight increase in nitrite the first two weeks of running Biohome. Then those fell to zero and have remained there since. Nitrates fluctuated consistently between 5-10 ppm until i hit about the 5th month. At that point I noticed that nitrate levels fell to undetectable with my testing kit. I had to get a low range kit to see anything below 5ppm. From month 4 to current my nitrate levels have been holding steady at a very low level of .05 to .07 ppm. I only have to do water changes once a month and those are only 5g when I clean the sand bed. Simply put this stuff is amazing at keeping the water parameters in line. I will definitely be incorporating it into my sump design when I setup my 75G tank.

Question: What happens to Biohome Ultimate when your canister/tank fails and you dry thr media. Can it be used again? (Fresh water)?

Thanks. BTW, me thinks it’s awesome stuff!

    • Don Chamberlain (verified owner)

      Thomas,
I recently refinished my koi pond recently and had it empty for a couple of weeks. Once I restarted it, it took a couple of weeks for the filters to get up to speed again, 100s of kilograms of Biohome. But now everything is back to normal.

I’d expect the same results for your filters. It will be just like starting up a new filter, however depending on how dry the media got, it may not take as long to develop. Glad to hear you like the media. I’m sure it will come back good as new once you get your tank up and running again.

      Good luck, and…

This bio media is amazing! I have a 90 gallon mbuna tank with 35 mbuna and 2 large canister filters full of this media, after two years my tank is always crystal clear! I’ve recently went around 2 months without doing a single water change, ammonia 0 nitrite 0 nitrate .5 !!! My nitrate levels are almost always 0! And my fish are doing amazing!! Love this stuff!!

      Rick,
Thanks for the great feedback. That’s excellent news, and thanks for your new order. I hope you have just as good a luck with that.

biohome maxi ultimate,i like the product very well, but my ph maintain at 7.5 ,how to down my ph because im currently have a red arowana which is the ph needed is 6.8

    • Don Chamberlain (verified owner)

      Reechard,
Glad to hear the Ultimate is working well for you. I suspect 7.5 is just fine for your Arowana, although borderline. I’d suggest trying our Super Peat Kit to make peat balls you can place in the tank or sump to lower the pH. You’d have to experiment a bit to determine the correct size peat ball. You don’t want to change the pH too fast, but the Super Peat does a great job and lasts quite awhile.

You can find it under Water Supplements on our website. Happy New Year, and…

So, I received my order of BioHome yesterday and it came with the Bio Balls, i added just half of the Ultimate to my Cascade 1000 and sprinkled the Bio Balls into 2 different trays. The Cascade was already running on an established tank for months. My parameters were steady at 0-10 Ammonia, 0 Nitrite and 10ppm or less Nitrate, ph 7.5. My 25 – 50% water changes always include at least 50% of RO to try and keep the parameters consistent. This morning woke up to 2 deaths and watched 3 other cardinals die over the next 1 hr. I tested the params, everything the same except PH has plummeted to 6.6. Is it possible the “extra” bacteria caused this? I just did about a 50% water change and got the ph back to 7.5 but very concerned that drastic drop and recovery may have already done its damage.

    • Don Chamberlain (verified owner)

      Scott,
Very sorry to hear about that. Certainly a drastic pH change like that is not good. I’ve never heard of the bacteria changing the pH. Certainly the nitrogen cycle tends to decrease pH, but I’m amazed it accelerated it that much. I’m going to confer with my friends in the UK to see what they think.

I am very pleased with this product. I ordered 2kg for my 18x18x18 shrimp tank. I think I used about 1.7 kg of the media on my shrimp tank, and the rest in a tiny hob filter for my dad’s 3 gallon tank. But within a month of having this product running, my nitrates went from around 30ppm to around 5ppm! Just one month! I have never seen a media reduce nitrates. I will definitely be ordering more in the future for my other fish and turtle aquariums.

I’ve had this media running in 2 canister filters 406 and fx6 for the last +2 years now. Nitrates have been basically zero for a long time now. This media does such an awesome job at reducing nitrates in a fish aquarium that I think it might be negatively affecting my aquatic plant in one of the tanks. I never have to perform a water change to keep the water chemically safe, only to remove dissolved solids. Occasionally I go a few months between water changes with no water parameter or alge problems.

    • Don Chamberlain (verified owner)

      Chris,
Thanks for the comment. That’s great news.

You mentioned an effect on your plants. I’m not sure what you’ve observed. The Pond Guru commented: “DOES HAVING ZERO NITRATES AFFECT PLANT GROWTH?
No – It can actually promote plant growth as the nitrate is processed into soluble nitrogen by the anaerobic bacteria and is easily used by the plants.”

Manysanke, an advocate of Anoxic Filtration points out” “Plants “prefer” ammonia to nitrate
Plants need nitrogen in order to make amino acids which are then combined together to make their proteins. They can take up nitrogen either as nitrate (NO3) or ammonia (NH3).

However, using nitrate is more costly to the plant in terms of energy because nitrate has to be converted by the plant first into nitrite and then into ammonia. Only after nitrate has been converted into ammonia can it be incorporated into the plant amino acids.

On the other hand, once ammonia has been taken up by the roots it becomes immediately available to be incorporated into amino acids without the plant first having to expend energy as it does with nitrate. In fact nitrate uptake by plants requires so much energy that they can only do it while they are making energy by photosynthesis in the daytime.

However, taking up their preferred nutrient, ammonia, requires so little energy that they can continue to take it up through the night as well as during the day.”

Not sure of this info helps or just confuses things, but thought it might be worth sharing.

      Happy Fish Keeping,
      Don

After reading reviews and watching YouTube video of this filter media I decided to take the plunge and order some for my newly refurbished 60 gallon tank and my daughters 15 Fluval Flex. I purchased the recommended amount for my Sun Sun 304b and 1kg extra to throw some in the Flex for a total of 5kg. I was a bit annoyed at first that I had to sign for the media when it was delivered and I’m lucky I was home at the time, however…. After reading the message that came along with the media and the reason why I couldn’t agree more and totally appreciate and understand why.

My tap water has a natural Nitrate of about 10 PPM and in my 60 Gallon has been running much HIGHER 80-100 than that because I re-used old substrate that probably should have been thrown out. After using BIOHOME it has dropped down to about 10-15 PPM and that is only after a month and I know it takes much longer for the proper bacteria to be fully established to fight Nitrates… so I am very happy. My only complaint is that after putting BIOHOME in my daughters 15 Gallon planted tank all of her parameters have read zero across the board after a month so her water quality is always better than mine…. lol Thank you for the great customer service and letter added documentation and letter and thank you for the great product. I could not be happier and will be buy more product soon after I saw the shower filter that I intend to buy for my next project and populate with this wonderful media!

    • Don Chamberlain (verified owner)

      Tony,
Thanks for the review. Sorry about the signing, but glad you understand. I’d hate to have to explain to your daughter if someone ripped off your media.

I’m glad to hear of your excellent results and your daughter’s even better results. I guess we know who the fish keeper in the family is!

Waited to write my Review until I gave it a bit of time so here it is. Ordered 1 Kg of the Ultimate and some course, medium and fine foam on 1/15/18 received at door 1/18/18 WOW!!! New tank set-up for 1 week but I wanted this in my canister filter regardless if I restarted the cycle. Into the garbage went some of the junk that came with the filter (plastic balls and ceramic rings). Put 1/2 tray of that junk before my fine foam I bought to keep some bacteria if any was there. 2 full trays of Biohome so tank cycles roughly 4 weeks no fish, no chemicals besides Ammonia to feed the bacteria. I had Nitrates at 20 PPM at the spike of Nitrates for about 4 days and 0 PPM since. Already shared this information with a friend, he ordered some and the same results his Nitrate dropped. in just 1 week. I will never use another product again Biohome you got it right thank you!!! Additionally, my Cichlids say Thank you!

I have been using Seachem Matrix in my 150 gallon heavy stocked freshwater aquarium for awhile. Matrix is good product. But after discovering Biohome Ultimate and researching online and watching hours of video. I decided to give it a try. My guess is that it would perform at least as good as Matrix. I was wrong. My water chemistry with Matrix was good. No Ammonia, no nitrites, but I would always have around 30-40 Nitrates. Of course it goes down after water changes, but it would eventually creep up to 30-40 ppm by the end of the week. Now the surprising part, after using Ultimate Biohome, I noticed my Nitrates wouldn’t climb higher than 20 ppm. Amazing stuff. Now in all of my other filters I use Ultimate Biohome. I highly recommend this product.

Just wanted to pop my review in here real quick since now I’ve been using this stuff for a few months! Bought this stuff for my first canister filter to go alongside some extra filter pads and the ceramic rings + bio balls that come with the canister. Put it on the very top with the starter balls, and in no time the filter was going strong and processing the ammonia I was dosing. By the time I was done cycling, I was able to easily add in a rather large bio-load without any crashes or strain. Will definitely be getting more soon when I switch another tank over to a canister 🙂

Just came in today and I am very pleased. I ordered 4 kg and either I got a little extra or I didn’t need as much as the site said. Either way I am happy because I have plenty left over for another tank and my HOBs as well. Came with a full bag of starter balls. I have 2 canisters, fluval brands 206 & 306 and I have 1.8 kg left over. But like I said I will be starting another tank soonish and that should take out the rest of it and give me a little for my HOBs. Was thinking that it was gonna come in 4 separate 1kg bags, but it showed up as one 4kg bag instead. Will definitely send people to y’all as this was way cheaper than going through other sources (ie. Amazon) and trying to get it that way.

I must say that there are so many opinions thru the social media regarding Fish Keeping, that all is confusing. I came across a video from Richard (pond guru), he is so an ambassador for the hobby. In that video he explains so clearly about aerobic, and anaerobic nitrospira bacteria. I don’t remember anyone talking about this thru any video. Then he introduced BioHome Ultimate media and how to apply it to your canister along with the mechanical media. Simple, bottom tray coarse, medium, fine foam pad. Next trays strictly Ultimate media, aprox 1.5- 2kg per each 26 gallons of water. Keep plastic balls before placing the bottom tray. It makes so much sense, the pond guru backs it up with his scientifically tank cycling explanation. I ordered 4kg of Ultimate media from Don, …order came with 14 starter balls (on my first 2kg order) and a letter of information and appreciation with my name on it. Replaced all media in my Sunsun 304b which supports an 75 gallon tank with Oscar and tank mates. By next morning the water was picture like clear. The fish were very very happy and actively swimming in their excellent clean water. I will never go back to the old days. Thanks Richard (pond guru) for so valuable education and to Don for making BioHome Ultimate media affordable and available. Thankyou all so very much. Happy Fish Keeping is now a reality….

      Ryan,
You’re a patient man. Thanks for the feedback. Always glad to sell more, but you may become tired to servicing those trays if you find debris getting through to the Biohome. You may be able to service them adequately by simply swishing the little trays in a tub of tank water to remove any debris that you might see on the surface.
Good luck with your Biohome and the 407, and…

I purchased the BioHome Ultimate media a little over a month ago and I must say I am truly impressed. Running a Fluvial 407 with three trays filled with this media. It took about a month for the full nitrogen cycle to take affect in my 55 gallon fresh water tank. Two weeks after my last water change, my ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels are showing 0ppm using the API master test kit.

    • Don Chamberlain (verified owner)

      Michael,
Thanks for the feedback. That’s great news. I’m glad you had such good results. Probably a bit under filtered for a 55 gallon tank. Probably need more like 4 kgs to see nitrate reduction, but you can’t beat 0 ppm. I hope it holds up as your fish load grows.
      Thanks for the order, and…
      Happy Fish Keeping,
      Don
