Biohome Mini  Media is a smaller version of the popular Biohome Ultra Media. It is designed for use in smaller trickle tower and shower filters, as well as canister filters.

1 kg occupies about 72 cu in. To see how much your filter requires click on, “How Much Do I Need“.

It has a  extremely porous structure. The media allows both nitrifying (aerobic) and denitrifying (anaerobic) bacteria to grow on and through it’s unique structure.

Complimentary Filter Starter Balls (1/4 Bag per Kilogram) are shipped with each order. The media recovers quickly after the use of medications.

Biohome allows both nitrifying (aerobic) and denitrifying (anaerobic) bacteria to grow on and through it’s unique structure. This allows it to also control nitrates. Check the Rules of Thumb for Nitrate Reduction to estimate how much you’ll need to reduce the nitrates in your pond or tank.

Biohome Mini Media is a biological filter media and good mechanical filtration must be provided to insure the water passing through it does not contain any debris that might clog it.

First time fish keeper. I am using this stuff for my Tilapia broodstock/breeder tanks. I will eventually setup an aquaponics systems with these Tilapia. I followed all of pondguru’s advice with pimping out my Aquatop CF300 filter with coarse/medium/fine mechanical filters. Initially, I loaded the remaining two trays with Seachem Matrix which is just absolute garbage (it is simply just bleached rock). I used Dr Tim’s One and Only to get the bacteria started. After 5 days in this setup, nitrites began to show up. But the ammonia definitely was not going down within 12-24 hours. After a month, the nitrites just would not go down and the ammonia was not disappearing in 12-24 hours. Unfortunately, I was in a bit of a rush since the fish had been ordered and I needed to get the tank cycled. I knew about BioHome, but didn’t know there was a US distributor. I went with Seachem Matrix. I found out later that GreatWaveEng was the US Distributor for BioHome and had a reasonable flat rate for shipping so I bought a ton of this stuff.

Since the cycle was started with the Seachem Matrix, I didn’t want to start all over. I emptied the top tray of the Seachem Matrix and loaded it with the BioHome. I took the Seachem that I took out and put it in a bowl and placed it in the tank to complete the cycle. After a few days, the ammonia was disappearing in 12-24 hours finally! But the nitrites were not going down. Seems I had a less than ideal pH environment for the nitrobacter (nitrites>nitrates) to colonize. I lowered the pH to 7.2-ish, and in a week, the nitrites were zero ppm. At this point, my nitrates where 20-40ppm. I decided to add some feeder fish (as coal mine canaries) while I waited for the Tilapia to arrive. I also seeded the rest of the media in empty used Big Gulp cups from 7/11.

Now here is the kicker. After putting in the feeder fish, I didn’t perform any water changes. I wanted to see if the fish could survive. Of course, they did. But……after remeasuring the nitrate levels, I could see that the nitrates had gone down as well!! Holy sheeeeesh! The holy grail of bio filtration and it took my only two months to get there (I know I got lucky here somehow). This stuff kicks all kinds of arse!

Now that I am a little more well versed with fish keeping, I will be building my own canister filter for a connected tank system for my brookstock/breeding tanks. And the only bad thing I can say is that the quality of this product doesn’t match the great service that came from the US distributor that sold this to me. Much praise and thanks to pondguru for finding such a US distributor whose integrity in doing business is exceedingly rare these days. GreatWave Engineering is the best.

This product is revolutionary. Pond Guru, rocks. My fish love this stuff. I never understood the cycle till now. Always had problems with cartridges. PG taught me the right way to cycle. Throwing away cartridges, throws away your cycle. Now it is coarse, med, fine, biohome. This substrate has cut down my aquarium maintenance, my tank is clear, I have loads of beneficial bacteria. Thank You, for this product.

I’m just starting in the hobby and I’ve done my research before committing to anything. This product seems to be considered the best by others in the hobby so I’m going to be using it. I will say the the service is terrific, lightning quick shipping.
